With the advent of clean air legislation in the 1970's, coal-fired power plants were requried to significantly reduce the relase of particulate matter from stack emissios. Although much progress has been made in this regard, the effort has significnalty increased the volume of combustion by-products collected in solid form at the generating stations. These by-products initially consisted of boiler slag, bottom and fly ashes, which represent the residual unburned components of coal.
