The Role of Materials and Processes in Deffective Aircraft Bonded Structural Repairs

This paper will identify materials and process deficiencies in repair procedures included in aircrfft Structural Repair Manuals or issued as approved repairs. Field experience has shown that some bonded repair designs and application procedures have little chance of success, and in many cases service lives of components have been reduced by poor repaires. The Royal Australian Air Force has found it ncessary to fromulate its own Engineering Standard and to develop in-house courses on composite materials and adhesive bonded repairs in order to manage repair technology in its fleet, principally because of the low level of understanding exhibited by repair authorities. Examples of deficient repairs wil be presented, together with guidelines for correct repair installation. The author has for some time advocated the preparation of a Standard which should be applied to Structural Repair Manuals at the time of delivery of the aircraft. The oncepts presented are based on experience iwht defence aircraft, but are equally applicable to the civil airline industry.
