THE LIFE SCIENCES PROGRAM OF THE SPACE MISSION MIR '97 - OVERVIEW AND SELECTED LIFE SCIENCES EXPERIMENTS

An overview is given on the Science Program of the German Russian Space Mission MIR '97. The paper highlights the different scientific disciplines in the field of ,,Life Sciences" by focussing on selected experiments, which contribute to the scientific evaluation and preparation of countermeasures to enable long-duration spaceflights. Experiments from the scientific disciplines Cardiovascular Regulation, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Bone and Muscle, Operational Medicine and Radiation Biology are introduced. Summarizing the scientific potential of the different exemplary experiments, the ,,Life Sciences" Program of MIR '97 is to be seen as a directional supplement of fundamental and applied science, approaching the challenge of envisaged future long term space flights.
