The high resolution which can be obtained by computer assisted tomography is used to investigate the liquid distribution and void fraction of the structured packing OPTIFLOW by Sulzer CHEMTECH. With a spatial resolution of 0.4 mm it is possible to detect the thin liquid films on structured packings. The experimental set-up consists of a custom-built second generation tomograph. The liquid and void fraction distribution in the structured packing with a quiescent gaseous phase is visualized. Thewater/air system is used. The liquid distributor consists of a perforated plate. The measured average hold-up of the packing is in good agreement with empirical correlations.
