Equivalent linear response spectrum methodology for the seismic response of a simple structural system with a uni-directional support (tension only or compression only)

Typically,structures with significant non-linear supports are analyzed using either time-history algorithms or response spectrum enveloping techniques,with multiple stiffness values to represent the non-linear supports.However,there are problems associated with these methods:(1) time-history analyses require considerable computer time,and,more importantly,the generated response files can become too large; (2) linear response spectrum analyses,when used to envelop the non-linear solution,are excessively conservative.
