Hybrid formulations that incorporate chemical functionalities polymerizable by both UV initiated free radical mechanisms and UV initiated cationic mechanisms were investigated. The material used for the cationic polymerization was a cycloaliphatic epoxy. Various acrylate functional materials were utilized for the free radically polymerizable portion of these formulations. Testing of the UV cured foumulations was conducted to assess their performance compared to formulations polymerized only with a cationic or free radical mechanism. The resulting data indicate some hybrid cure formulations may overcome deficiencies characteristic of pure cationic or pure free radical systems.
