An investigation has been conducted to determine the relative effects of ultraviolet (UV) dose and peak irradiance on the tensile strength, elongation, and elastic modulus of formulations containing a polyether-based acrylated aliphatic urethane oligomer and a mixture of acrylate functional monomers. The effects of oligomer molecular mass and percent oligomer in the formulation were also investigated. The results of the study indicate that the UV dose, oligomer molecular mass, and percent oligomer all have greater effects on the tensile properties than does the peak irradiance. Possible explanations for this result are presented in this paper. The results of this investigation should be of interest to people responsible for developing new applications for UV polymerization technology where close control over the tensile properties of the materials is required.
