Novel photo-crosslinking systems by the use of polymeric photo-base generators and 1, 4-benzoquinone (BQ) are investigated. In the photolysis of polymers bearing acyoxyimino (AOI) groups as a polymeric photo-base generator, pendant AOI groups can be transformed to amino groups and the crosslinking proceeds by the reaction of the amino groups and BQ. In this photo-initiated thermal crosslinking, free radicals formed in the photolysis of AOI groups are found to play an important role in the crosslinking. That is, this photo-crosslinking is proved to be a hybrid-type photo-crosslinking. Furthermore, the BQ is found to be a sensitizer for the photolysis of AOI groups. Copolymers of O-acryloyl acetophenone oxime (AAPO) with methyl methacrylate(MMA) and ethyl acrylate (EA) are used as polymeric photo-base generators, and 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) and 2-dodecylthio-1, 4-benzoquinone (DSBQ) instead of BQ were also examined.
