Faster Cationic UV Curing Using a Microwave Powered Excimer Lamp

A new UV lamp technology was demonstrated to speed the cure of cationic UV systems containing a mixed triaryl sulfonium salt cationic photoinitiator. The new UV lamp is a microwave-powered excimer lamp. the emission spectrum contains a single emission band centered at 308 nm with a very narrow band width (c. 2 nm). The cationic photoinitiator has a UV absorption band centered at about 310 nm, which is an ideal match with the excimer lamp emission. Cure rate studies confirmed the increased efficiency of the excimer lamp for curing cationic systems when compared to curing with standard microwave-powered mercury and doped UV lamps. The excimer lamp will provide faster cure, allow the use of less photoinitiator, or both.
