Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are generally the main topic of any debate about paint and the environment. The emission of VOCs is not usually associated with radiation-curing systems, which rank amongst the most environmentally friendly. Despite this, radiation-curing formulations often contain low-molecular components, whitch in some circumstances can be emitted and lead to odour. This paper will look at the influence on emission levels of factors such as the substrate, binder, diluents, photo-initiators and curing conditions. It will demonstrate how emissions can be reduced by the use of suitable raw materials. Because radiation-curing coatings are solvent-free and can be cured in seconds without heat, they represent an important step towards cutting emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and saving energy. And because most energy is produced by burning fossil fuels that means a cut in CO_2 emissions too.
