Structure-Property Relationships of Urethane Acrylates

Urethane acrylates are currently used in a wide range of commercial radiation-curable applications. Compositions, and therefore properties, of urethane acrylates are varied in order to meet defined performance criteria for each application. It is useful, therefore, to have structure-property relationships available for urethane acrylates n order to allow intelligent decisionson composition. In this paper, a polyether based urethane acrylate of a certain structure is shown to have faster cure speed than other polyether and polyester based urethane acrylates. Variations in the structure of this type of urethane acrylate were made by changing both the diisocyanate and the molecular weight of the polyether polyol. The properties and performance of these various urethane acrylates are evaluated and discussed with regards to structure-property relationships.
