Meeting the demands for functional coatings with the aesthetic appeal of a low gloss finish is a challenge for UV curable systems. This paper will investigate the process conditions which contribute to a successful low gloss coating application. This will include assessment of silica types and characteristics. Further considerations will be the UV spectral output used to effect polymerisation, the placement of the UV curing units in the coating line and the effect of temperature. The impact of such process conditions on the gloss level of selected coatings will be reported.
