Corrosion is a major problem in prestressed piles with steel tendons for marine structures. The high tensile strength and high resistance to corrosion of carbon cables are more suitable to marine environment. SDSM&T developed a satisfactory anchorage system in 1987 for pretensioned prestressed concrete system. This anchorage was used in a bridge constructed in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1991. Twelve prestressed precast piles of 14 in. square and 45 ft. long were built using carbon prestressing cable. They were tested for their performance before making these piles in a prestressed concrete plant. These piles were designed to carry modem heavy cranes used by Navy.
