Presented is the first comparison ever made of performances between membrane bioreactor (MBR) and conventional activated sludge treatment system (AS), for the treatment of a chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP) effluent. Experimental results indicated that the performances of the MBR were superior to those of the AS. The gains obtained are mostly significant for the removals of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), and the toxicity of 48h-LC_(50) for Daphnia Magna.
