The total capacity of grid-connected wave power is just under 700 kW worldwide, dominated by a 350 kW Tapered Channel plant in Norway, and a 150 kW oscillating water column in India. Three smaller plants (20, 30, and 60 kW) are now operating in Japan, as is a 75 kW project at Islay, on the southwest coast of Scotland. These are all land- or breakwater-based systems. A 2 MW plant known as OSPREY, based on a pre-fabricated steel caisson, was briefly deployed as a stand-alone unit off the north coast of Scotland in August 1995. Floating wave energy conversion devices have been ocean tested at a much smaller scale and only for periods of months at a time.
