Although today's main shaft seal technique for normal hydraulic turbine, at both home and abroad, is becoming perfected, there is still a lot of things to do with pump turbine, which sealing pressure is higher than that of a normal turbine due to its lower distributor elevation determined by the limitation of cavitation conditions, especially for those high head, high speed, and large capacity units that appeared one after another these years. Since the first unit put into test run in April 1993, there have been about 25 main shaft seals damaged of the four 300-Mw pump turbines at Guangzhou Pump Storage Power Station(GPSPS), that has severely affected the safety and stability of operation.
