The experiment investigations on local hydrodynamics and mass transfer behavior of air-lift loop reactor have confirmed the existence of bubble distribution zone (BDZ), a region exists above the gas sparger in the reactor, which is characterized by its dynamic state of bubble coalescence-breakup and its higher mass transfer rate. The experiments were carried in a 50L rectangular air-lift loop reactor and a 10L bubble column. The corrleations of local K_La with operation conditions were established. A simulation of bubble coalescence-breakup was developed on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence. The calculated data agree well with the experiment results. The results presented in this paper are of fundamental importance to the development of gas-liquid reactors.
