Approximately 67percent of Brazilian oil production come from offshore fields. The exploitation of oil and gas reserves offshore progressing to greater water depths directs to the need for developments towards the automation of underwater techniques. The University of Campinas, UNICAMP, in a cooperative program with GKSS Research Center and PETROBRAS, is carrying out a R&D program on robotics, for automated subsea work. This paper presents the steps of this research project described below: i) Test facility: construction of an underwater suitable to robotics applications, using the modified robot with a mobile base and their control unit; ii) Off-line programming: development of a software for the simulation of the complete scenario (handling system, tools, environment, mobile base); iii) Automatic Tasks: development of control and man-machine interface is focused on remote application of robots.
