In an earlier study, the authors had conducted an experimental investigation to improve the efficiency of an existing residential air conditioning unit by retrofitting the condenser with a media pad evaporative cooler. The results showed an increase in the system performance by 17-20% and a decrease in diversified peak of 0.33 kW. Based on the experimental results an economic impact study was done. This paper summarizes the energy and economic impacts that can be expected from both the utility and consumer perspectives. On the basis of this investigation it is recommended that evaporatively cooled condensers may be used for Demand Side Management (DSM) program for reducing energy consumption and peak demand for air conditioning in the residential and commercial sectors.
