ENERGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Energy is required both for industrial development and sustenance of technology. Petroleum oil is the main source of energy for several applications including power production and transportation because of its cheapness and availability. However, since the unprecedented hike in the price of oil in the 70's, the supply of cheap oil could no longer be guaranteed. Increases in the cost of oil affected the developing countries, especially the non-oil producing ones.Consequently, this paper presents a critical survey of energy options that have benign effects on the environment and which can guarantee sustainable development in the developing countries. The utilization of renewable energy resources is of particular interest, and is thus, given prominence in this investigation. The importance of research, documentation and development in applied energy is highlighted.
