SERVICE INFORMATION IN DIGITAL VIDEO BROADCAST SYSTEMS

In most digital TV broadcast systems currently developed in various countries around the world source coding and multiplexing are based on the ISO/IEC 13818 ("MPEG-2") specifications which have been established as an International Standard (IS) in November '94. Part 1 ("MPEG-2 Systems") of these specifications allows the description of contents of Transport Stream packets for the purpose of demultiplexing by use of the Program Specific Information (PSI). The Service Information (SI) system developed within the framework of the European DVB Project complements the "MPEG-2 PSI" by providing a set of tools to enable Integrated Receiver Decoders (IRDs) to collect and store information about the physical and service characteristics of all programmes carried within one or more networks.The paper will describe the DVB SI system which offers an open standard based on the use of "tables" and "descriptors" which fully follow the syntax defined by MPEG-2. Along with the PSI data the proposed DVB SI data are inserted into the Transport Stream with their associated elementary video, audio, and ancillary data streams so that the IRD can automatically configure itself for the particular service selected by the viewer.
