The corrosion of a commercialy available lead crystal glass (24% PbO) by different aqueous solutions of ethyl and methyl alcohols was studied at 75°C for 1/2-6h. Increasing the concentration of alcohols increased the release of Pb and decreased the release of Na, K and Si as well as the weight loss. The quantities of Pb released by both alcohols were significantly lower than that of Na, K or Si. The results obtained were explained by considering the mechanisms of attack by which the different cations are released from lead alkali silicate glasses by aqueous solutions and the solubility of the compounds formed.
