In the last few years the sol-gel process has turn an interesting and promising method to synthesize materials for obtaining films with definite functions The techniques of film preparation - dip and spin coating - are simples and allow to prepare coatings will smooth optical surfaces with controlled stoichiometry, structure and texture We give an up to date overview of what has been achieved in the field of chromogenic materials (anodic or cathodic electrochromic coatings and ion storage electrodes) used in electrochromic (EC) devices. Finally we stress the future developments in this fast growing field.
