In the course of an airbrake design study DES simulations and wind tunnel tests of a limited set of airbrake shapes have been performed. The principal suitability of DES simulations in this design task is briefly shown. In the wind tunnel tests particle image velocimetry measurements have been used for determining the mean values and turbulent fluctuations of the velocity field. Those quantities are compared to the numerical results in order to assess the accuracy of the numerical simulation. Measurements have been made in the symmetry plane as well as in two horizontal planes. In one of these horizontal planes focused measurements of the shear layer development near the airbrake edge were performed.
