Utilities are entering a new competitive environment and, therefore, methods are being sought to most effectively conduct their business. Utilities are exploring different organizational and operating practices that can result in reductions in the O&M budgets. Many of these oranization structures involve a reduction in workforce and loss of valuable years of experience. Therefore, there is a need for improved maintenance procedures that can allow utilities to remain competitive and still maintain the service reliability. A methodology that can potentially provide significant savings in maintenance costs is Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM). RCM is a maintenance-scheduling technique that optimizes maintenance resources while maintaining the level of reliability expected from the equipment.
