Optical fiber amplifiers spur a new generation of submarine systems (keynote paper)

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, owing to powerful features, such as high gain, high power, low noise and ease of implementation, are key components of current and future submarine systems. Both repeatered and repeaterless systems will benefit from optical amplification, with an increase of power budgets and new network architectures.
