The flat gain over a broad spectral width offered by fluoride-based fibre amplifiers is very attractive for multiwavelength systems operating in the 1.5 μm window. The relevant parameters (input pump and signal powers, fibre length) that determine gain flatness and noise characteristics of fluoride-based fibre amplifiers have been experimentally investigated. As an illustration of the improved gain flatness, the feasibility of 40-Gbit/s aggregate bit rate transmission through 440 km standard fibre is experimentally demonstrated using a 25-nm wide 16-wavelength multiplex and four fluoride-based fibre-amplifiers. The reported results show that fluoride-based amplifiers are very promising for multiwavelength system applications.
