In this paper we present a software tool for Progressive Image Transmission.This tool,built using the Khoros software development environment,offers a set of standard menus from which the user can choose image types,distortion criteria,coding scllelnes and bit rates.This makes possible fast and convenient evaluation of Progressive Image Transmission(PIT)schemes.Progressive Image Transmission is becoming increasingly important for interactive image colnnlunieat.ion over low-bandwidth channels.In PIT,a low resolution image is first.transmitted with as few bits as possible.This image is then progressively im proved by further transmissions until the received image is a reasonably good representation of the original image.Evaluation of any PIT scheme involves both objective and subjective measures.Good subjective performance is important for PIT schemes because it is desired that the gross structural information of the image be sent in as few bits as possible.Moreover,there is a very strong interaction between image type attd the image coding scheme employed.Some algorithms perform extremely well for“quiet”images but fail on“busy”images.We propose a software tool that offers a sirepie.couvetlient and flexible platform for performing these evaluations in a userfriendly manner.Under one platform.the tool permits Simmltaneous evaluation of two or more PIT schelnes using both objective and subiective quality measures.It is an open architecture enabling addition of new modules with ease.Hence the proposed tool offers a simple,convenient and flexible platform for evaluating PIT schemes.
