A VFD (variable frequency drive) can be used as speed control on electric motors. Gas and NGL handling facilities use electric motors as drivers for forced air coolers, pumps, and compressors. By using a VFD to vary the speed of the motor to match the power needed, it reduces plant electric costs and provides tighter process control. VFD control is based on a variable such as temperature, level, or pressure. VFD's maintain the rated capacity of the motor and its application by operating at 100% speed.
