The IC marketplace and its ever changing package configurations has created niche opportunities for IC specific socket adapter products. These custom design socket adapters enable users to keep abreast with technical and economic upgrades in IC devices and avoid availability issues without incurring lengthy and expensive product redesign cycles.However, these adapters are now also being used as cost effective multiple chip carriers and miniature daughter boards. Once reserved for ceramic and hybrid materials, these custom glass epoxy adapters are now being used to support a variety of packages ranging from Ball Grid Arrays to TAB devices. The dense layout constraints associated with these applications have essentially forced the utilization of double sided SMT, including the use of SMT PGA devices. This paper presents recent McKenzie advancements in the design and application of SMT with various IC socket adapter products.
