Atmospheric pressure conveying characteristics, determined from experimental trials, indicated that a minimum conveying velocity of about 10.5 m/s [2,067 ft/min] would result for coal. This is particular to the specific grade of coal and pipeline system utilised. The conveying capability for coal is similar to that observed in this paper for silica; a similar minimum conveying velocity and maximum solids concentration existed. Due to the problem of explosion risks, pneumatic conveying at elevated pressures with coal has not been possible to date. Under test conditions, an inert gas would be necessary. The results of elevated pressure trials for silica discussed in this paper provide an insight into what may result when conveying coal at elevated pressures.
