This paper summarizes the findings of a year-long pilot study conucted on a water source deriving from the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta in Claifornia (State Project water). The study examined issues regarding disinfection, disinfection by-product formation and control, taste and odor control, coagulation-filtration, and regrowth potential. The focus of this paper is on the treatability issues posed when seasonally high bromide ion concentrations are encountered. Brominated organic compounds and bromate could be formed at significant concentrations when high bromide concentrations are present. The brominated organic compounds could be controlled by addition of ammonia prior to ozonation, while bromate could be controlled by pH depression prior to ozonation.
