This paper concerns the application of Air Liquide U.S. LP’s patented SPAL?technology to the induction furnace heats of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys at QualityCastings, LLC. in Waukesha, WI.There are various techniques that can be applied when protecting molten metal alloysfrom oxidation and moisture using inert gases during melting. These can range from inhousedesigns to standardized systems using specialized hardware and gas deliveryequipment. This paper will present a comparison of an in-house manufactured system formelt surface protection and the Air Liquide’s SPAL? technology. The costs and benefitsthat resulted from each approach will be discussed in detail.Application of the SPAL? process will have constant beneficial results on the conditionthat it is applied consistently.
