Experimental Study of the Transonic and Supersonic Weapon Bay Flow Characteristics

The use of internal weapon bays in modern jet fighters has recently gained high attraction by the aeronautical engineering community. In the current study, wind tunnel experiment of the transonic and supersonic flow inside a rectangular weapon bay is conducted in the high speed wind-tunnel (HSWT) of the Israel Aerospace Industry (IAI). The weapon bay investigated herein is a part of a generic jet fighter configuration. A total of four weapon bay configurations were investigated; a clean rectangular shape, V-shape, one-door and two-doors configurations. Both static and dynamic pressure measurements were taken in order to characterize the weapon bay flow field. The results revealed a distinct effect of the doors and the flow regime (transonic/supersonic) on the flow field and acoustical spectra of the weapon bay. These insights could serve as a basis for future design of jet fighters' weapon bays to allow store safe separation and more favorable environmental conditions.
