Thermoplastic Films PEEK™ for MLI Spacecraft Applications

In order to increase competitiveness and improve technical characteristics of passive thermal control, THALES ALENIA SPACE decided to qualify a Multi-Layer-Insulation (MLI) blanket with better performance. PEEK™ (Polyether ether ketone), a thermoplastic film from VICTREX® Company, is the first component of this Multi-Layer-Insulation (MLI) blankets development. Currently, MLI blankets used in Space applications are mainly based on poly-imide films (KAPTON® from DUPONT de NEMOURS™). Without being on a competitive market, this product becomes more and more expensive. The aim is to find cheaper products with better technical performances. First, the paper will propose a state of the art regarding to polymers with technical characteristics near those of poly-imide. Secondly, it will present the selected material to replace poly-imide films KAPTON* in MLI applications: a thermoplastic film based on PEEK™. Through this paper, it will be exposed: 1. the technical characteristics of PEEK™ films with respect to telecom S/C specifications, 2. the development plan for this material, 3. the description of preliminary tests and results on PEEK™ films. Moreover it will be presented future prospects for this material in space industry applications. Then it will conclude on technical improvements brought by the material with regard to those used in current MLI blankets of spatial industry.
