The addition of carbon to loomy clay, a natural mixture of quartz and clay minerals, offers novel refractory composites in the alumosilica-carbonaceous-system. The challenge of mixing selected carbon sources with fine fractions of microscaled kaolinitic minerals and amorphous alumosilica-phases of sub-μm-dimensions led into a novel mixing and granulation process using phenolic resin. The new developed carbon containing alumosilicate composition of defined granules can be processed in pressing or casting routes. Flexible bonded refractories in Al_2O_3-SiO_2-C system with low wettability, improved resistance against oxidation and low slag infiltration can be designed for high corrosive refractory areas of shaft furnaces.
