When helicopters operate from remote sites, the surface conditions can include loose particulate that, when disturbed by rotor downwash, create thick obscurants which interfere with the pilot's ability to maintain visual contact with the ground. When this phenomenon occurs in dusty environments, the visual affect is known as "brownout" (see figure 1).
