An ultra low volatility benzoate film forming aid has been developed for the waterborne coatings market. This technology has been commercially successful in the replacement of more traditional high volatility film forming aids. The purpose of this paper is to present new data to support the use of this technology in exterior applications. To accomplish this, a 24 month exposure study of 5 formulations was carried out in southern Florida. Evaluations of dirt pickup, delamination/cracking, visual appearance, mildew growth and gloss retention demonstrate that this ultra low volatility technology is well suited for exterior applications.
