Pure ATM transport networks in comparison with hybrid SONET / ATM transport networks

摘要

The SONET transport network is about to be replaced with technology that allows flexible allocation of transport bandwidth. Mass deployment of SONET started in 1991 because it offered easy add & drop and network reliability benefits that asynchronous systems could not. By the end of 1993, less than 50 percent of transport equipment sold in the USA were asynchronous. This paper explains why the network benefits of ATM transport could replace many deployments of SONET within the next few years, just as SONET replaced it's predecessor.
