Capacity on the long haul backbone optical networks is key to successful realization of the data communications networks with everi-increasing demand for bandwidth. Total capacity deployed on the backbone routes will reach to multiple hundred Gigabits per second by the end of year 2000. Long haul carriers now plan to deploy systems that scale to terabit capacities. The goal of achieving terabit network capabilities is market and technology driven. Market drivers are the emergence of new applications and services and the substantial growth of the traffic. Technology drivers are higher spectral efficiency and wider optical bandwidth that enable achieving higher capacities on the links. The market and technology trend continues to decrease the cost per bit per km and to increase the demand for more bandwidth.
