Managed wavelength services are not only commercially viable, but also play a critical role in the continuum of optical Internet bandwidth solutions. Managed wavelength services are a vehicle for accessing unprecedented economic efficiencies for carriers and end-users alike, while making a broad range of services accessible and enabling new service level choices. This paper describes key industry and technology drivers for the emergence of the managed wavelength service set. Examined are alternative Bandwidth options for applications and the resulting benefits. Scenarios profiled depict quantitative benefits and illustrate why this type of solution makes sense for wholesale providers as well as enterprise end-users.
