Industry wide service providers are trying to answer the same question. "How to bridge the gap between an infrastructure that is optimized for voice and a future demand for bandwidth that is ever increasing and bursty in nature? There are two considerations in solving this dilemma; the access network and the transport network. See Figure 1. One solution in the access network is the use of xDSL transmission. Many vendors are competing to provide xDSL solutions in the access. However, until now no technology was available to optimize the transport and backhaul of xDSL traffic. This paper addresses the considerations and advantages of ATM Virtual Path (VP) technology as a superior transport solution of xDSL traffic.
