A catastrophic flood due to extraordinary rain in a very short time period, over 600 mm in five hours, produces important changes in the evolution of the shoreline, because it generates higher deposits than the natural evolution of the longshore transport caused by normal wave action. The high magnitude, low frequency flood called `spark freshet' (avenida relampago) is the opposite of the natural slanted wave transport of sediments and it represents the dynamic nature of the alluvial geomorphic changes with significant accretion occurring during hours, and limited erosion over years. The potential for dramatic changes in dydrological events and small variations in oceanographical aspects are the topics of this paper. We try to establish the procedure to recover the coast with improved coastal management. The Albunol and Huarea natural riverbeds, Granada, South East of Spain are two cases studied to understand the whole process.
