Development of Suture Skill Training System - Improving Device Portability and Evaluation of Quality of Surgical Task

Up to now, there are few comprehensive research related to the development of evaluation methods for surgical instruments and procedures. We consider of special importance on quantitatively evaluating the surgical skills of trainees. Last year, we introduced the Waseda Kyotokagaku Skin No.1 (WKS-1), which has been designed to evaluate suture/ligature tasks by embedding sensors under an artificial skin. In this paper, the newest version WKS-2 is detailed; where a PIC is used for embedding all the required electronic components, a user-friendly GUI and a database management system were developed. Finally, an evaluation parameter was considered by implementing a vision processing algorithm.
