摘要

Electronic 3-D maps are becoming more widely accepted as replacements for traditional maps in the cockpit. As this transition occurs, we must determine how these electronic maps can be most effectively configured for performance and safety. Inherent in the technology availabel in electronic maps is the ability to customize display features. The challenge to human factors engineers is to design map controls and displays that optimize navigation performance. In this study we compared the eye scanning patterns on different terrain features between experienced and novice pilots during a visual flight rules (VFR) simulation. Implications for pilot training and suggestions for the design of electronic maps are make as a result of these findings.
