Management and control of distributed multimedia devices and streams through object-oriented middleware

摘要

In this paper an architectural concept for the management of a distributed multimedia environment based on object-oriented middleware is presented. The system enables remote control of distributed multimedia devices such as MPEG encoders, decoders, video servers and file systems with multimedia content. Through this approach, the multimedia streams between the devices can be bound to an appropriate communication infrastructure, such as native ATM, RSVP or another network which may or may not be QoS aware. The system is easily extendable and provides a generic framework for the support of a variety of multimedia devices and communication infrastructures. Experiences using a prototype of the concept are given.
