Direct Access and External Memory Management of Multimedia Documents, an Object-Oriented Approach. Part 2: The Prototype

The prototype implementation of compound document access and management, a directaccess and external memory management model, is presented. It covers the needs for storing multimedia documents in multiuser and distributed environments. The core of the prototype is constituted by a relational database, which holds all data about classes, instances, aggregations, and so on in a set of relations. Constraints control the consistency of manipulations. Around this, an object oriented respecting semantic database is simulated by a software shell, written in C. This shell provides two application interfaces: one 'pure' object oriented and a procedural interface provides access on a 'more lower level'. A demonstration environment is developed together with the 'audio and synchronization extension' project to show the synchronization of text and graphic of a document in combination with the audio content.
