摘要

Many coastal structures have to be designed to withstand the high impulsive forces created by breaking waves. These wave impact pressures consist of a very short but high pressure peak, followed by a longer lasting but much smaller hydrodynamic pressure. The experiences with blockwork structures led to the suspicion that impact pressure can propagate into water filled cracks of such structures, creating high splitting pressures in these cracks and thus destroying the structures from within. At Queen's University Belfast, an experimetnal program was developed in order to assess this problem. It was shown that wave impact generated pressures can enter into and propagate in water filled cracks, confirming the possibility of the suspected damage mechanism. A research network (BloCSnet), comprising the Universities of Belfast, East Anglia, Edinburgh, Sheffield and ROme III was formed to investigate theoretical and practical aspects of wave impact pressure propagation into cracks.
