A slotted microstrip patch antenna has been developed which provides a broader beam compared to a conventional square or rectangular patch. Dual frequency operation was achieved using a stacked configuration of the elements with a parasitic top patch (a solid patch without any slots) above a slotted patch which was driven with the help of an equal power splitter to give a right handed circular polarization. A bandwidth of 9% is achieved for a VSWR of less than 1.7. A planar array has been developed using the slotted patch to provide a wide angle coverage from 25° to 55° above the horizon with a variation of 2 dB in gain. This paper presents the measured patterns, optimized impedance match of the single element and the simulated results of the array at the mid-band frequency.
