A systematic treatment of conversion of vector wave functions

The problem of radiation and wave propagation in two-medium or multimedium is a important aspect of engineering electromagnetism. The most interesting electromagnetic phenomena are induced by surfaces of discontinuity or rapid change in the physical properties of the medium . It is therefore the case that we often encounter electromagnetic problems whth multi-boundaries in applications of electromagnetic theory. For example, there are flat and spherical or cylindrical coordinate surfaces in the problems of scattering from spherical or cylindrical objects in two-medium half spaces. However, how to expand boundary conditions on two different boundary surfaces is a difficult problem. Fortunately, we can overcome this difficulty by using conversion technique of vector wave functions. In the following, we present a systematic treatment of the conversion technique and some applications. For ease of representation, the vector wave function expansions of electromagnetic field is discussed briefly, at first.
